Rowena is a paraplegic who recounts her experience of how she perceives good equipment - "I try to get across to people that it's not just about access, it means that i can have fun again".
Rowena's view of having fun again is an important one to bear in mind because having the appropriate equipment is a good outcome but having fun with the assistance of that equipment is a GREAT outcome.
The great outcome can be realised by those around you providing the right support and understanding what are the objectives to be achieved. This can include having the right solicitor if you are pursuing a personal injury claim to secure compensation to pay for rehabilitation and equipment. I will always work closely with my client and their supporting team to select the most appropriate equipment for medical needs but also to maximise the quality of life.
I am privileged to be able to be instructed by those with spinal cord injuries through the joint venture of Aspire Law LLP between Moore Blatch Solicitors and Aspire Charity.
If you have suffered a spinal cord injury as a result of an accident then you may benefit from speaking with a spinal cord specialist on 0800 157 7611.
Accessibility is more than just getting around “It’s funny”, Rowena said. “I’ve found that the world seems to be divided between people who look at me in the Strycker or the Boma and go, ‘Oh that must be fantastic; that must really make a difference’, ‘I bet she can get out and about now’. Other people just look at it and say, ‘That’s a really great machine’. It is, but I feel like they don’t understand just how much difference it makes to people’s lives, rather they just recognise it as a good bit of machinery. I try to get across to people that it’s not just about access, it means that I can have fun again.”
