On Friday 16th June 2017 it was confirmed that Amazon had been successful in its bid to acquire the US natural and organic grocery chain Whole Foods. Industry commentators are speculating that this could be the beginning of a dramatic change to the grocery retail industry in both the US and UK.

Whilst Amazon has an existing online grocery service offering, the acquisition marks their entry into potentially expanding their services to a shop front setting. The amalgamation of the Whole Foods business and Amazon's extensive distribution network has caused speculation that Amazon could be a driver of change in terms of integrating their technology into the consumer experience.

Although Whole Foods is a US company, this certainly raises the question of how online UK grocery retailers such as Ocado will be affected by this development and whether a UK acquisition is in the future for Amazon.
